Burglaries, Chase End With Suspect Tased
Newberry, SC (WLTX) -- Newberry County Deputies say two burglaries led to a high speed chase and a suspect being tased for resisting arrest.
Christopher Blake Shirey, 23, is accused of breaking into Wilson's Grocery on Highway 176 in Pomaria Monday night and breaking into another building and taking guns from inside.
Deputies say Wilson's Grocery was closed at the time and that Shirey fired two gunshots through the front door in order to get into the building. A deputy responding to a different burglary on Highway 176 noticed Shirey's vehicle leaving the area. Investigators say Shirey would not pull over and drove up to 80-miles-per-hour while trying to get away from deputies.
They say the chase stretched 8 miles, and the suspect drove on logging roads and power line right of ways to try to lose the pursing deputies. A SLED helicopter joined in the pursuit. That helicopter was already in the area helping in a search for a missing hunter.
Deputies say the chase ended when Shirey stopped at a relative's house. After being confronted, deputies say Shirey resisted arrest and was tased before being taken into custody. Shirey has blood on his face in his mugshot, but deputies say he was not injured in the arrest.
Deputies say they found rifles stolen from the home on Highway 176 inside Shirey's vehicle as well as a small amount of marijuana, an open beer and items stolen from Wilson's Grocery.
Shirey is charged with two counts of Burglary 2nd Degree, Failure to Stop for a Law Enforcement Vehicle, Resisting Arrest, Driving Under Suspension 3rd Offense, Simple Possession, Operating Uninsured Vehicle, Open Container, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Bond for Shirey was set at $31,500.
