2 Suspects Shot by Officers at Apartment
Thursday, August 7, 2014

Columbia, SC (WLTX) Two suspects were shot by officers Wednesday afternoon at the Brook Pines Apartments. Columbia police spokesperson Jennifer Timmons says around 1 p.m., Columbia police, Richland County deputies and the State Law Enforcement Division were responding to Brooks Pines looking for two carjacking suspects. Police say the suspects were located inside a vehicle. However, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says the suspect drove toward a Columbia Police officer, hitting the officer in the arm. Members of all three departments then fired their guns, wounding the two suspected carjackers. The officer is not injured seriously but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He has since been released. There's no word on the condition of the suspects. Ordinarily, SLED investigates officer-involved shootings, but because they also responded, the Lexington County Sheriff's department has been tasked with probing the incident. The most recent shooting at the Brook Pines Apartment complex, just off Broad River Road, was July 2 of this year when a man was charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting of his brother-in-law and his sister.
