Sheriff: Forensic evidence identifies body discovered in corn field
ORANGEBURG, SC (WACH) – Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said investigators have identified the body discovered in a Holly Hill corn field earlier this month.
Ravenell says 26 year-old Adelso Barrientos of North Charleston was found near Farm Field Road.
The Orangeburg Sheriff points out investigators were able to properly ID the man from forensic evidence discovered at the corn field.
“The hard work of our Forensic Investigators and all officers led us to identify Barrientos. They were in contact with several local, state and federal agencies to get us to this point in the investigation. This investigation is far from over as there is more to be learned about Barrientos death,” said Ravenell.
Ravenell said around 8:30 p.m. on July 8, a concerned citizen was working in the area along Farm Field Road and smelled the stench of something decaying.
The individual followed the stench and located a shoe in a ditch. The person called law enforcement and upon arrival deputies located human remains behind a bush.
Investigators said Barrientos had acquaintances in Orangeburg and ask anyone that knew Barrientos or his family to contact Investigations at 803-534-3550 or Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
