Sheriff: Man Sexually Assaulted Girl, Provided Obscene Material
Thursday, February 20, 2014

Richland County, SC (WLTX, AP) - Richland County deputies have arrested a man they say sexually assaulted a girl and provided obscene material to her.

August Byron Kreis III, 59, is charged with criminal sexual conduct 2nd degree with a minor and disseminating obscene material to a child.

Sheriff Leon Lott says earlier this month, the victim's mother told officers that her child had been assaulted. Deputies say he also gave the girl the obscene material over a three month period.

The Associated Press reports Kreis was once the leader of the Aryan Nations and sought out national attention, appearing on The Jerry Springer Show on an episode called "A Racist Family."

The AP also reports he served six months in jail in 2011 after pleading guilty to taking $193,000 in a need-based military pension, but failing to report other income. When he pleaded guilty, he was in a wheelchair because of several amputations from diabetes.

Lott says the investigation is ongoing, and more charges are expected from the Lexington County and Kershaw County Sheriff Departments.

The sheriff also asked for anyone else who may be a victim of Kreis to come forward.
