Richland robber attacks pregnant woman with Mace, steals purse

COLUMBIA, SC A robber using Mace attacked a pregnant woman, dousing her with the stinging spray, Sunday night in the St. Andrews section of Richland County

The attack with the peppery chemical spray startled her into dropping her purse, which the robber ran off with. It contained cash, credit cards and other forms of identification, according to the Richland County sheriff’s department.

Because of her pregnancy condition, county Emergency Medical Service took her to Palmetto Baptist hospital to be examined, Deputy Curtis Wilson said.

At the time, about 10 p.m. Sunday, the woman was walking from her car to her home in the 700 block of Zimelcrest Drive, on the east side of Broad River Road.

About 15 minutes earlier, about two miles away, on the west side of Broad River Road, a man sprayed Mace on another man who had just gotten out of his car.

In that incident, in the 1800 block of Longcreek Drive, he victim had no valuables. The attacker fled, and the victim was treated by EMS.

In both cases, the robber was described as a black male. One victim described the attacker as “tall and skinny.”

Mace is a chemical aerosol spray originally designed for self-defense.

Besides causing headaches and possible loss of balance, it can restrict a person’s breathing, cause uncontrollable coughing and burn the eyes to such an extent that a person cannot see. It can also cause nasal discharges and severe stinging on the nerves on nerves on the face.
