Student Arrested After Lakewood High Bomb Threat
Friday, January 31, 2014

Sumter County, SC (WLTX) - A Lakewood High School student is facing charges after deputies say he made a bomb threat against the school Thursday.

Deputies say the male student is being charged with making a bomb threat, disturbing schools, unlawful use of a phone, and threat/threatening life, person or family of a public official, teacher or principal.

An incident report states that the student sent an e-mail threat Thursday saying that he had placed bombs around the school. Deputies say he also claimed he would shoot as many students and teachers as possible.

In response, district leaders and the law enforcement evacuated the building just after noon. "Our students and staff did an excellent job of following the procedures as outlined in the emergency management plant," said Sumter Schools Spokesperson Shelley Galloway in a statement.

Deputies and State Law Enforcement Division agents and the bomb squad unit searched Lakewood High for just over two hours, but did not find any devices.

Students were allowed to go back inside just before classes dismissed.

Investigators were able to locate the student and take him into custody. According to the incident report, the student told officers it was a hoax.

The investigation into the incident continues.

In an effort to be transparent, we should tell you that News19 was one of the places that received the email warning about a possible bomb. We talked to law enforcement, and after discussion decided it was in the best interest to wait until they knew what they were dealing with before we went with the story.

We received several emails with different subjects, including one that said "lives will be lost." Part of it read, "I have placed four bombs around the school. They are set to go off at 12:30. You will not find them. Isn't it amazing, the things you can get on the internet? With only a cell phone?"

It also made threats to shoot surviving students and teachers.
