Free Gun Locks Passed Out to Increase Firearm Safety
Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The National Shooting Sports Foundation and Senator Lindsey Graham teamed up with local law enforcement on Tuesday to talk about firearm safety and hand out free gun locks. THE NSSF says accidents involving guns have gone down 22% in the past 15 years and the higher distribution and use of locks play a part in those figures. Users have to unload their guns in order to use the locks, and officials say this is especially important because simply hiding a weapon isn't enough. "How would you feel if a child found a loaded weapon in your home and hurt themselves or killed another child? You'd feel terrible," said Senator Graham. "There's an alternative to that, everything is a balance. So if the police officers who use guns as a living do this, we should all follow their lead in my opinion." The Columbia Police Department and Richland County Sheriff's Office will continue to pass out the free locks, which can be picked up at either office.
