2 dead after SUV plummets into river, Blossom St. Bridge reopened
Friday, January 17, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - One man and one woman were killed late Thursday night after an SUV careened off the Blossom Street bridge and into the Congaree River.

Crews were able to remove the vehicle with a crane and recovered the body of a man around 1:30 a.m., authorities said.

"The vehicle suffered a good bit of damage," Watts said. "The windows were knocked out and stuff like that so we want to make sure that there wasn't somebody else that may have come out in the river, so hopefully family members and friends will be able to tell us that."

All lanes of the bridge at Blossom Street reopened around 3 a.m.

"From everything that I have been told it doesn't seem that anyone else is involved at this time, but the City of Columbia traffic unit is investigating it, so they will be looking at all possible scenarios as to why the vehicle ran off the bridge," Watts said

Watts said he plans on releasing the names of the victims sometime Friday.

South Carolina Department of Transportation workers said Friday they planned to erect a temporary railing on the bridge where the SUV broke through.

It is expected to take about two weeks to fully repair the bridge.
