Sheriff holds graduation; increases efficiency and decreases expense‏
Tuesday, December 17, 2013

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott will hold a Reserve Deputy Graduation Ceremony tonight, December 17, 2013 at 6:00 PM at Crane Creek Training/Community Center located at 7405 Fairfield Road, Columbia SC 29203. The ceremony will honor the new deputies for completing 6 months (240 hours) of training; and they will be presented with their credentials and badges.

The Sheriff stated that Reserve deputies are volunteer certified law enforcement officers. They go through the same training as hired deputies and have the same powers and authority. They are required to work a minimum number of hours per quarter to maintain duty status; yet, most work many hours beyond that.

The Reserve Deputy Program was established by Sheriff Leon Lott in 2001. The Sheriff stated that he looks to these volunteer deputies to help fill gaps and greatly enhance the Department in many ways. The Sheriff added that many volunteer to work holidays, weekends and nights, which is when the Department needs the extra manpower. Although many of the Department’s reserve deputies work hard at their full-time jobs, in their spare time they don a uniform, a badge, and a weapon - just to work this dangerous job for free. The men and women of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s Reserve Program are indeed a select group of outstanding citizens.

Richland County Sheriff Lott commends the reserves deputies for their volunteerism, community service, and upholding the Department’s high standards of professionalism and core values. Sheriff Lott commends them for giving back to and caring about those they serve - the citizens of Richland County.

Sheriff Leon Lott is committed to continuing to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department and finding ways to save the citizens money. Sheriff Leon Lott created the Reserve Deputy Program to do just that. With 283 arrests and 2,705 calls for service answered in 2013 alone, Sheriff Leon Lott honors and thanks the Reserves for their professional service and dedication.
