Three days after disappearance, man still missing
Tuesday, November 26, 2013

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Richland County Sheriff's deputies are hoping members of the community can help them locate an 84-year-old man who disappeared Saturday.

Deputies say Jerry Glenn Helms drove away from his Todd Branch Drive home Saturday morning to run errands and make a possible trip to Sears.

A worker at Columbia Place Mall reported seeing Helms around 11 a.m. He has not been seen since.

"Since Saturday at eleven o'clock, we've had no sightings of him, no new information," said Lt. Heidi Scott with the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Family members say Helms had recently spoken about wanting to go to the Fort Bragg or Gastonia, North Carolina areas to visit with friends following the death of his wife, who passed away on Nov. 14. They had been married 58 years.

Helms has dementia and Alzheimer's as well as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. He sometimes has difficulties remembering things and can get confused about locations, family members said.

Helms is a white male, 5'8" tall, 165 pounds, gray hair, with blue eyes. On Saturday, he was wearing black jeans and a long-sleeved flannel shirt with dark colored pin stripes.

He was last seen driving a white 2005 Dodge Caravan with South Carolina Tag FLC-222 and a distinctive red/black/yellow German plate on the front.

"Well we believe he may have tried to head to North Carolina, but the problem is he had dementia and is probably very confused, maybe turned around," said Scott. "So we aren't sure which direction we're looking."

Family members say he did not have a cell phone or an ATM card, so neither one of those can be tracked. He did have approximately $100 in cash.

Anyone with information about Helms is urged to call 911 immediately.

Deputies say Helms is known to frequent the areas of Gastonia and Fayetteville, NC.
