CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS
Monday, November 4, 2013

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is accepting donations of used cellular telephones and telephone accessories until September 2014 that the Sheriff’s Department will provide to Cell Phones for Soldiers. The non-profit group sells used cellular telephones and accessories to a recycling company and utilizes the proceeds to buy pre-paid telephone calling cards that are issued to members of the United States armed forces who are serving our nation outside the United States.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said used telephones can be donated to Cell Phones for Soldiers even if the devices are not in proper working order. Personal information and personal photographs should be deleted from all used cellular phones that are donated.

Metts said used cellular telephones can be donated at the following four facilities: Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington; North Region Service Center, 111 Lincreek Drive, Columbia; South Region Service Center, 102 Airport Road, Pelion; Sheriff’s Department West Region Headquarters, 4079-B Augusta Highway, Gilbert; and Crooked Creek Park, 1098 Old Lexington Highway, Chapin.

Sgt. David Amick is coordinating the effort by the Sheriff’s Department to donate used cellular telephones and telephone accessories to Cell Phones for Soldiers, Metts said. Citizens who have questions concerning donations for Cell Phones for Soldiers can contact Amick on his cellular telephone at (803) 223-3778.

In September, the Sheriff’s Department in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Corrections and Lake Murray ABATE donated 8,053 used cellular telephones and 2,300 telephone chargers to Cell Phones for Soldiers, Metts said.

Since 2010, the Sheriff’s Department in partnership with the Corrections Department and Lake Murray ABATE has donated more than 25,000 cellular telephones and accessories to Cell Phones for Soldiers, Metts said. As a result of the donation, Cell Phones for Soldiers provided more than 828,000 minutes of free telephone talk time to members of the United States armed forces who are deployed overseas. Telephone minutes from the sale of cellular telephones that the Sheriff’s Department donates are provided to members of the armed forces from the Midlands.

The effort to donate used cellular telephones and telephone accessories to Cell Phones for Soldiers reflects the Sheriff’s Department mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
