West Columbia Police Make Arrest for Granby Oaks Apartment Fire
Wednesday, October 9, 2013

West Columbia, SC – The West Columbia Police Department has made an arrest in the fire investigation from Granby Oaks Apartments on State Street.

On September 12, 2013 officers responded to Granby Oaks Apartments, located at 800 State Street, for an apartment fire. When officers arrived on scene a section of the apartments was fully involved with flames and heavy smoke showing. Police and fire personnel attempted to evacuate residents that were in the potential path of the fire. The occupant of apartment 207, Jay Gross, was not reached in time and died in the fire.

A subsequent joint investigation by the West Columbia Police Department and the State Law Enforcement Division’s Arson Unit determined the fire was not set intentionally.

Daniel Dupuy, 47, of 800 State Street Apt. 108 in West Columbia has been taken into custody for Involuntary Manslaughter. Investigators ascertained that Dupuy discovered the fire in its early stages and failed to extinguish the fire, call 911, or warn other residents of the imminent danger.

Mr. Dupuy is currently awaiting a bond hearing at the Lexington County Detention Center.
