Arrest made for obtaining money for deceased individual, who is not deceased
AIKEN, SC - Investigators with Aiken Public Safety have arrested two individuals for obtaining money by false pretenses and soliciting without a license. Investigators arrested Kendra Lachell Morris(21) of Augusta, GA and Zachary Lacasey Sims (20) of Augusta, GA. A third individual was also participating, and was unable to be located.
On 10/16/2013 these individuals were soliciting money from motorist along Fabian Drive in Aiken, SC. The individuals were carrying signs indicating they needed money to bury a family member. They were collecting the money in Halloween pumpkins they had just purchased. They were able to obtain several hundred dollars from citizens prior to being arrested.
Upon speaking with the two individuals each one provided a different name and funeral home of the alleged deceased person. Investigators contacted the funeral homes and there were no deceased people there by that name. We want to emphasize that both names provided are not deceased. One of the suspects after being arrested admitted to this scheme being fraudulent, and using the money they receive to pay their bills.
The City of Aiken has an ordinance against individuals soliciting without first obtaining a license. The license ensures the individuals are representing an organization or have a legitimate cause for obtaining the money.
