Student with stolen gun arrested at high school
SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A 16-year-old Sumter High School student was arrested Thursday afternoon after school resource officers discovered a handgun in the student's bookbag.
Sumter Police officers assigned to Sumter High School received information while checking into an unrelated incident that the student had the weapon.
Officers located the student and upon searching the student's bookbag discovered a .45 caliber handgun inside. Police said the handgun was not loaded, but a loaded magazine was found in the bookbag.
A records check of the handgun's serial number revealed that it had been reported stolen last week from an incident in Richland County.
The student has been charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, possession of a firearm on school property, minor in possession of a handgun, and possession of a stolen firearm.
The juvenile was currently being held at a South Carolina Juvenile Justice Detention Center in Columbia pending a detention hearing.
"Sumter School District has a zero tolerance policy for weapons, and the student will receive disciplinary action in accordance with the Sumter School District Code of Conduct," said a school district spokesperson in an e-mail statement Thursday.
