Sheriff’s Office Investigating Accidental Shooting Death
Thursday, September 12, 2013

Lancaster, SC – On 09/10/2013 at approximately 8:09 pm deputies were dispatched to Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster in reference to a gunshot victim. Upon arrival Deputies learned that Robert A. Hood (B/M Age 35 Address: 497 South Ave Lancaster) had been transported by personal vehicle to the hospital. It was reported that Hood was shot at his residence. Hood died shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Criminal Investigators and Crime Scene Investigators responded to both the hospital and South Ave. where they began a detailed investigation.

The investigation thus far has revealed that Hood met Demario Buchanon (B/M DOB: 10/21/1982 Address 622 N. Market St. Lancaster) at his residence on South Ave. for the purpose of acquiring a handgun. During the meeting Hood and Buchanon were handling the weapon when it accidentally discharged striking Hood one time in the abdominal area. It has been determined that the shooting was accidental and not intentional.

Both Hood and Buchanon are prohibited by law from possessing firearms. The handgun was located hidden near the scene and had been reported stolen. Buchanon has been arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Handgun and possession of stolen property. Buchanon was jailed and is currently awaiting a bond hearing.

Sheriff Faile said, “It is unfortunate that these individuals who were not legally allowed to possess a weapon put themselves in this position causing someone to lose their life. Everyone should always be mindful of safety when handling firearms and remember the cardinal rules of firearms safety. 1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded. 2. Always

keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you have made conscious decision to fire. 4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.”

If you, or someone you know, have any information regarding any crime, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers. You could earn a reward up to $1,000.
