Orangeburg store clerk shot robber, police say
Thursday, September 26, 2013

ORANGEBURG, SC - An Orangeburg convenience store clerk opened fire on a would-be gunman Tuesday night, sending the man to the hospital with a gunshot wound, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Josheul Allen, who has addresses in Smoaks and Orangeburg, was arrested at the Regional Medical Center where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to his left arm.

The 20-year-old man with no prior criminal history in Orangeburg County was charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a crime after being cleared for detention.

Bond was set on Allen Wednesday at $5,000 cash or surety.

Law enforcement was notified of an armed robbery attempt that had taken place at the Quick Pantry located at the junction of Bamberg Road and Neeses Highway.

A store clerk told county deputies that around 9 p.m., a man wearing a black mask and carrying a handgun entered the business demanding money. The clerk told the man the store had no money, resulting in the gunman waving the handgun, according to the incident report.

While the gunman waved his weapon around, the clerk snatched his own handgun from nearby and managed to fire off a single round, the report said. The clerk told deputies that he believed his shot may have struck the would-be robber but was uncertain.

Investigators checked the store’s security video footage, which showed a black male wearing a black shirt with a front logo of “I love haters,” a black baseball cap and shorts, according to the report.

While investigators were at the store, dispatchers radioed to say a man had just checked in at the RMC emergency room with a gunshot wound. Investigators found a man at the hospital who appeared to be the one caught on the store’s video camera committing the robbery.

The man gave deputies a statement admitting to the robbery attempt, according to the report.
