Tip leads to gun arrests related to gang shootings‏
Wednesday, August 14, 2013

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott stated that deputies received a tip that several gang members would be armed and attending a funeral at Bible Way Baptist Church on Atlas Road, in Lower Richland County, today. Responding to this tip, deputies arrested Isaac Watson (DOB 11-30-93) on probation violations and Shamari Jones (DOB 9-8-93) on two counts of unlawful carrying of a pistol. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that deputies intercepted Watson and Jones as they entered the parking lot of the church, in an SUV armed with pistols, to attend the funeral.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Deputies have determined that Watson and Jones have connections to not only the shooting that occurred on August 2, 2013 in the Candlelite subdivision in Lower Richland County but connections to the gang involved in the shootings on July 25, 2013 and August 1, 2013 in the Candlelite subdivision and one inside the City of Columbia on August 7, 2013.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that these shootings are connected to gang activity and will not be tolerated by the community or the Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff added that the community and Department are at war with the gangs and will win the fight against their behavior and what they represent. Sheriff Leon Lott added that today’s arrests prove that the community is united with the Department and that Deputies will take every tip that comes in seriously and will investigate them completely.

Sheriff Leon Lott concluded that the Departments Uniform Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations and full service Forensic Laboratory will continue to assist in the homicide investigation in the City of Columbia and any activity which poses a threat to the citizens and the quality of life in Richland County.
