DEPUTIES CHARGE 16-YEAR-OLD BOY WITH DISTURBING SCHOOLS
LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Friday, August 23 charged a 16-year-old boy with disturbing schools in connection with an incident in which the boy made vulgar comments and made sexually suggestive motions while speaking to several female students as the female students walked off the campus of Irmo Middle School at 6051 Westcott Road near Irmo at about 3:43 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20. The incident was reported by a Sheriff’s Department school crossing guard who was working at the school.
Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies released the 16-year-old boy into his mother’s custody. Deputies will recommend that the 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office prosecute the 16-year-old boy in family court in Lexington County on a charge of disturbing schools. Under South Carolina law, Metts said he cannot release information that could identify the 16-year-old boy because the boy is a child.
The 16-year-old boy is not enrolled as a student at a school in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties or any other public school in the area, Metts said. Deputies placed the 16-year-old boy on trespass notice for Irmo Middle School.
On Tuesday, the 16-year-old boy dressed in a dark light jacket that was unzipped and a white garment that left most of his upper torso exposed, styled his hair in Pippi Longstocking braids and wore blue jeans, with the zipper unzipped, Metts said.
The school crossing guard told a deputy who works full-time as a school resource officer at Irmo Middle School that several parents reported that they saw the 16-year-old boy standing at a fence on the perimeter of Irmo Middle School, making inappropriate comments to several female students, Metts said. Several female students told the school crossing guard that the 16-year-old boy appeared to be inappropriately touching his private parts.
The school crossing guard saw the 16-year-old boy inappropriately touch himself as the boy leaned against the perimeter fence outside Irmo Middle School, Metts said. The fence is adjacent to Quail Valley Plaza Shopping Center.
