TWO MEN ARRESTED FOR STEALING COPPER WIRE
Wednesday, July 10, 2013

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies in cooperation with the Pelion Police Department on Wednesday, July 10 arrested a 33-year-old Columbia man and 48-year-old Columbia man on charges that the two men stole scrap copper wiring worth less than $2,000 from South Eastern Construction of the Midlands on Harvest Court near Pelion.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Elton Rama Simpson, II, 33, of 5916 McMillan Circle, Columbia, and Timothy Ted Storey, 48, of 5916 McMillan Circle, Columbia, on a charge of petit larceny. Simpson and Storey were being held on Wednesday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting bond hearings.

Arrest warrants allege that Simpson and Storey went to South Eastern Construction at 256 Harvest Court early Wednesday morning with the intent to steal scrap copper wiring worth less than $2,000, Metts said.

At about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, deputies responded to the activation of the burglar alarm at South Eastern Construction, Metts said. The owner of the business saw on a surveillance camera system that two men and a red Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicle were at the business. The owner of the business then drove to the business and confronted Simpson and Storey.

Pelion Police Chief Chris Garner said a Pelion Police Department officer heard on his police radio that deputies were responding to a call concerning the activation of the burglar alarm at South Eastern Construction and went to the business in accordance with a mutual aid agreement with Lexington County. After he arrived at the business, the officer placed Simpson and Storey in investigative detention and later turned the investigation over to deputies.

Deputies found that the red 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, which is registered to Simpson’s wife, was parked next to a storage building at South Eastern Construction, Metts said. The vehicle’s tailgate was open, and deputies found scrap copper wiring in the vehicle’s rear cargo area. Deputies found a large pile of scrap copper wiring stored on the ground behind the vehicle.

Deputies arrested Simpson and Storey on a charge of petit larceny, Metts said.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Simpson or Storey to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
