4-year-old wounded in suspected gang shooting to leave hospital
COLUMBIA, SC - The 4-year-old girl wounded by a stray bullet while watching TV inside an apartment last week is scheduled to be released from an area hospital later today, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Zahara Walker was watching Dora the Explorer on June 8 when a bullet ripped through the front door and struck her in the lower back.
Police say the bullet originated from a shootout between two groups of people in the Colony Apartments.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, but sources tell WIS the gunfight was the result of gang violence.
Zahara's mother says the bullet damaged the little girl's liver and stomach. Police said Zahara is scheduled to go home today. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Columbia Police apprehended 21-year-old Marcus Sinclaire Gantt at his home on Lansing Circle last week.
Gantt is charged with attempted murder, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is being held without bond.
Police have also located a silver Dodge Charger they believe was involved in the incident.
No other arrests have been made.
