Man arrested after firing gun into apartment floor
Thursday, June 6, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A man is in custody after police say he fired a gun into the floor of an apartment causing the evacuation of the building and crisis negotiators to be dispatched to the scene.

Columbia Police arrested 53-year-old Andre Washington and charged him with first degree assault and battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and discharging a firearm into a dwelling.

The incident happened Tuesday morning in the 700 block of Brandon Avenue not far from Garners Ferry Road.

Police say a female was inside the apartment when Washington shot the gun into the floor. The neighbors below were not hurt.

The Columbia Police Department SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. Police officers evacuated the building and began talking to the Washington.

A spokesperson for the department says Washington surrendered after approximately 30 minutes.
