Andrea Could Bring 3-5 Inches of Rain to Midlands
Thursday, June 6, 2013

(WLTX) - Tropical Storm Andrea is expected to bring heavy rain to South Carolina for much of the first half of Friday.

Tracking the Tropics: Latest Interactive Map Showing Track, Rain from Andrea

Currently, Andrea has sustained winds speeds of 65 miles an hour. As of Thursday afternoon, the storm was moving ashore in Florida.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the entire South Carolina coast.

In Florida, the storm has brought flooding and isolated tornadoes, but no reports of widespread damage.

So what will happen in South Carolina? News19 Chief Meteorologist Jim Gandy says the track will be the main determinant of what we will see here and the exact path remains unclear. He says if Andrea stays along the coast, our area will likely only see rain; if it moves further inland, severe storms and tornadoes become a possibility.

Regardless of the exact path, heavy precipitation is likely. "It's a safe bet that it's going to bring 1-3 inches of rain," Gandy says. "There could be isolated amounts up to 5 inches."

Gandy says the center of circulation should pass along South Carolina's coastal plain, which means those areas will see the highest winds, but he says blustery conditions will be experienced in the Midlands. "We might see wind gusts up to 35 to 40 miles an hour," Gandy said.

Andrea will then move rapidly up the eastern seaboard. By early Saturday morning, the storm is expected to off the coast of New Jersey.
