LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives charged a 16-year-old Gilbert boy as an adult with breaking into a restaurant on Main Street in Gilbert on May 6 and stealing a cash register from the business.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies on Saturday, May 18 arrested Edgar Martinez, 16, of 134 Hayes Street, Lot, 29, Gilbert, on an arrest warrant that detectives had obtained for Martinez as an adult on a charge of second-degree burglary. Martinez was being held on Monday, May 20 at a pre-trial detention facility on Shivers Road in Columbia that is operated by the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Deputies responded to a call on Saturday concerning a suspicious person on Hayes Street, Metts said. Deputies identified Martinez as the suspicious person and arrested Martinez.

An arrest warrant alleges that at about 1:20 a.m. on May 6 Martinez broke into Joey’s Sub Shop, 537 Main Street, Gilbert, and stole a cash register, Metts said. Deputies later recovered the cash register in a black garbage bag near a campsite in woods near Hayes Street and Main Street. The campsite was located less than 100 yards from the restaurant and near Martinez’s home.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Martinez to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
