Officer Shot and Wounded During Traffic Stop
Monday, April 1, 2013

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Charleston police officer has been shot and wounded during a traffic stop.

Police say the suspect was also wounded in the shooting Saturday night.

Charleston police had stopped a car near Interstate 526 when a man ran from the scene. Police Chief Greg Mullen says the suspect had a gun and turned on pursuing officers when shots were fired.

Police say the suspect is 26-year-old Mark L. Blake Jr. He was out on bond after being arrested in February on drug charges.

Police spokesman Charles Francis says the wounded officer is Corey Goldstein, who had been with the department since January 2012.

Francis says both men were still in the hospital Sunday.

Police have not said why officers stopped Blake.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
