CPD SEIZES $22K IN POT DURING TRAFFIC STOP; TWO MEN IN JAIL
Saturday, April 13, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC - Acting Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago announces the arrests of two men accused of trafficking a large amount of marijuana from another state to Columbia yesterday.

John Desmond Kelly (DOB: 6-30-1985) is charged with Trafficking Marijuana.

Harvey Jai Johnson (DOB: 13-2-1984) is charged with Trafficking Marijuana.

The charges stem from a tip regarding drug activity at a home at the Arrington Apartments on Carnegie Street.

During the investigation, CPD Narcotics Officers gained information that narcotics were to be delivered from another state to Columbia.

Officers say Kelly and Johnson were seen at the apartment at the time of the delivery.

Both are accused of transporting the box of marijuana in a car.

CPD conducted a lawful traffic stop of the suspects’ vehicle on Two Notch Road.

A CPD K9 Officer trained in narcotics detection, alerted to the car. Officers could also detect a strong odor of raw and burned marijuana coming from the car.

As a result, officers seized approximately 11 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $22,000. The green leafy substance field tested positive for marijuana.

Officers also seized close to $5,000 in cash.

Both suspects were booked and transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

All persons charged/arrested are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.

If you, or someone you know, have any information regarding any crime, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers. You could earn a reward up to $1,000.
