Multiple Home and Vehicle Burglaries in Downtown Aiken area
Tuesday, January 8, 2013

AIKEN, SC - The Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to the 300 block of Newberry Street SW for a burglar alarm just before 3:30AM. Upon officers arrival a male subject fled the area on foot. A perimeter was setup in the area. During the initial investigation it was discovered the suspect had also entered other homes adjacent to the initial location. It was also discovered a handgun was taken from one of the homes.

All of these homes were occupied by the residents asleep in other areas of the home. In each of the locations the suspect entered the home through some portion of the home which was unsecured. A short time later, while searching the area, a resident contacted 911 advising a subject was inside of their residence on the 200 block of Lancaster Street SW. The caller stated the subject was a male wearing dark clothing, and the suspect then fled the incident location on foot. An additional perimeter was setup. Each perimeter was searched by the Aiken County Bloodhound Tracking team. Public Safety also requested assistance from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to search the area with their helicopter.

During the initial search of the area Public Safety initiated a reverse 911 call to alert the residents in the area about what was going on, and to have them check
their property to make sure they were not victims of a burglary while they were sleeping. The initial search was unsuccessful in locating the suspect. The initial search of the area has been called off, and ADPS officers will continue extra patrols in the area throughout the time ahead. As of this release Public Safety has confirmed the suspect burglarized four (4) homes, and approximately twelve (12) automobiles were entered.
