New Nonferrous Metals Statute
Thursday, December 6, 2012

Lancaster, SC – On June 18, 2012 Act 242, R. 269, S.1031 was signed by the Governor and provided for some amendments to the nonferrous metals and demolishing of vehicles statutes. The amendments to the statute become effective Dec. 16, 2012.

The definition of Nonferrous Metals was changed to metals not containing significant quantities of iron or steel, but not limited to copper wire, copper clad steel wire, copper pipe, copper bars, copper sheeting, aluminum other than aluminum cans, a product that is a mixture of aluminum and copper, catalytic converters, lead-acid batteries, steel propane gas tanks, and stainless steel beer kegs or containers.

A permit to sell purchase, transport, and sell nonferrous metal is required. In the past, it was permissible to obtain a temporary 48 hour permit to transport and sell over the phone. Under the new statute, those who wish to obtain a permit to transport and sell must appear in person at the Sheriff’s Office. Permits are valid statewide and expire on the person’s birth date on the 2nd calendar year after the calendar year in which the permit was issued. There is no charge for the permit however a replacement fee of $10 will apply if a replacement permit is required.

If you, or someone you know, have any information regarding any crime, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers. You could earn a reward up to $1,000.
