Sheriff: Man found in burned home was shot multiple times
Tuesday, November 20, 2012

GASTON, SC (WIS) - Lexington County Sheriff's Department detectives are seeking help from citizens in identifying the person or persons who fatally shot a 60-year-old Gaston man at his home sometime between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Saturday.

Sheriff James R. Metts said the circumstances of the fatal shooting of Jimmy Lee Helms, 60, at Helms' home at 606 Blackville Road remain under investigation. Helms died as a result of being shot multiple times with a firearm in his upper torso, said Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman.

At about 6:44 a.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to a call concerning a fire at Helms' residence, Metts said. Firefighters with the Lexington County Fire Service found Helms' body on a couch inside the home. The fire caused extensive damage to the residence. Helms' body was badly burned.

The circumstances of the fire remain under investigation, Metts said. It appears that Helms was deceased when the fire started at Helms' residence, investigators said.

Metts asked anyone with information about Helms or the fatal shooting of Helms to call the Lexington County Sheriff's Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff's Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
