Man shot by Irmo homeowner identified
Friday, September 21, 2012

IRMO, SC - Police in Irmo have identified the man shot by a homeowner in the Friarsgate subdivision early Tuesday morning.

22-year-old Stephen Labrew is in critical condition at Palmetto Health Richland with a single gunshot wound. Labrew was shot by a homeowner who told police he saw the man breaking into his home through the kitchen window about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Labrew, whose last listed address was in the Friarsgate neighborhood, hasn’t been arrested, but could face criminal charges at a later date.

Once the homeowner fired his 9mm handgun, the man ran away, the homeowner said. Police are still investigating the homeowner’s role in the incident and have not charged the man with any crimes.

Police found Labrew collapsed with gunshot wounds on North Royal Tower Drive. Police initially thought he was shot twice, but later determined that a single bullet had created an entrance and exit wounds. Labrew was not initially identified by police because he wasn’t carrying any identification and refused to give emergency workers his name.
