DEPUTIES ARREST MAN CAUGHT IN ACT OF STEALING ITEMS AT HOME
Tuesday, September 25, 2012

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Sunday, September 23 arrested a 36-year-old Gaston man on charges that the man stole one wood-handled knife and one metal file that is used to work on wood from a carport outside a home on Corley Mill Road near Lexington. The homeowners’ adult son caught the man in the act of stealing the items from the carport on Saturday, September 22.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Robert Leonard Cooper, III, 36, at about 7 p.m. on Sunday at Cooper’s home at 429 Fallaw Road, Gaston, on an arrest warrant on a charge of second-degree burglary. Cooper was being held on Monday, September 24 at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.

An arrest warrant alleges that at about 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 Cooper entered the carport at the Corley Mill Road home with the intent to steal items, Metts said. Cooper possessed and tried to steal the wood-handled knife and metal wood file. Cooper dropped the items about 20 yards from the carport when he was confronted by the homeowners’ son.

The homeowners’ son provided deputies with the South Carolina license plate number for a 1997 GMC Jimmy sport-utility vehicle that Cooper used to drive away from the Corley Mill Road home, Metts said. Deputies determined that the sport-utility vehicle is registered to Cooper’s wife.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Cooper to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
