LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts and Lexington County Detention Center correctional officers will present a check in the amount of $2,289 to Dream Riders at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 2 in the Squad Room at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington. Dream Riders is a local non-profit group that conducts an equestrian program for persons who have mental or physical disabilities.

The check in the amount of $2,289 reflects proceeds from the first annual charity softball tournament that correctional officers with the Lexington chapter of the South Carolina Correctional Association conducted on July 13 at the Pine Grove Sports Complex, 701 Old Barnwell Road, West Columbia. All proceeds from the event benefitted Dream Riders. Sgt. Scott McDermott coordinated the charity softball tournament.

Dream Riders conducts an equestrian program for persons with mental or physical disabilities, including lessons in all aspects of horse riding as well as all aspects of caring for horses, Metts said. Participants also receive training that can enable them to participate in horse riding competitions.

Dream Riders began operating in Lexington in October 1998, Metts said. The non-profit group operates a Premier Accredited Riding Center, which provides more than 1,100 hours of horse riding lessons annually.

The charity softball tournament reflects the Sheriff’s Department mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
