22-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED FOR HAVING SEX WITH 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHOM HE MET VIA INTERNET
Friday, August 3, 2012

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Tuesday, July 31 arrested a 22-year-old Surfside Beach man on charges that the man engaged in a sexual act with a 14-year-old Gilbert girl whom the 22-year-old man met in an Internet chat room. The sexual act occurred in a car that was parked in woods along a driveway off Neely Wingard Road near Gilbert.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Derrick Bryant Amann, 22, of 1872 Gibson Avenue, Surfside Beach, on a charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a child who was between the ages of 11 and 14. Amann was being held on Wednesday, August 1 at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.

An arrest warrant alleges that Amann drove to Gilbert from his home in Surfside Beach for the purpose of engaging in a sexual encounter with the 14-year-old girl on Tuesday, Metts said. The 14-year-old girl performed a sexual act on Amann while they were seated in the front seat of Amann’s green 2000 Buick Regal sedan.

The 14-year-old girl’s father reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Metts said. The father told deputies that he woke up at about 6 a.m. on Tuesday and realized that his 14-year-old daughter was missing, along with his cellular telephone.

The 14-year-old girl’s father called the phone number for his cellular telephone and made contact with his daughter, who said that she was off Neely Wingard Road, Metts said. The 14-year-old girl’s father drove his vehicle to Neely Wingard Road, where he saw a green 2000 Buick Regal sedan that was parked in woods off a driveway.

The 14-year-old girl’s father told deputies that he stopped his vehicle and parked behind the Buick Regal sedan after he observed that the windows on the Buick Regal sedan were “fogged up,” Metts said.

Several minutes later, the 14-year-old girl’s father told deputies that his daughter exited the front passenger’s side door of the Buick Regal sedan, Metts said. The 14-year-old girl’s father then exited his vehicle and walked up to the Buick Regal sedan. The 14-year-old girl’s father told deputies that Amann was sitting in the front seat of the car, with his athletic shorts pulled down to his ankles. Amann was not wearing a shirt.

Deputies arrived on scene shortly after the 14-year-old girl’s father encountered Amann, Metts said. Detectives later arrested Amann.

Detectives reported the incident to the Horry County Sheriff’s Office, which is conducting a follow-up investigation concerning Amann, Metts said.

Under South Carolina law, second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a child who is between the ages of 11 and 14 is a felony that carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison, Metts said.
