Officer fires at man who police say tried to run him over
Monday, June 11, 2012

AKIEN, SC (WIS) - Officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety are looking for a man who they say tried to run down a police officer with a stolen vehicle early Saturday.

Police say the officer was attempting to stop a pickup truck in the parking lot of a gas station on York St. at Rutland Dr. just before 2 a.m. The truck was reported stolen from a burglary in Aiken Friday.

Investigators say the driver put the truck into reverse and instead of pulling away, drove the truck toward the officer. The officer tried to get out of the way, but there was nowhere for him to go, so he fired one shot at the driver.

After driving the truck to Crosland Dr. and Yates St., the driver ran from the vehicle.

SLED is investigating the incident.

If you have any information that can help identify the driver, or help police find him, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-Crime-SC.
