Gunfire at Branchville apartment; man sought
Wednesday, June 20, 2012

BRANCHVILLE — A 19-year-old was on the run after one — possibly two — shots were fired in a Branchville apartment complex around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Branchville Police Chief Randy Clark said.

No one was injured, but a 21-year-old man was “led away from the scene for safety reasons,” the chief said.

The shooting occurred as a result of a domestic dispute at the Branchville Apartments on Freedom Road (U.S. 21). Investigators have recovered “one fragment of a bullet round” from the victim’s apartment area.

Clark did not release the name of the suspect because the investigation continues. However, he said the suspect is not a resident of the apartment complex.

Witnesses say more than one shot was fired, Clark said.

He also said the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations unit responded to the scene after it was alleged that the suspect had barricaded himself inside of the apartment.

The Sheriff’s Office cleared the scene and remained at the apartment complex hours after the shooting took place.

Clark said the suspect could be facing a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill.
