Students sent home after school vandalized
Monday, May 7, 2012

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An entire high school has the day off after a break-in over the weekend resulted in extensive damage to the campus. One district official said the school is "a big mess."

According to Orangeburg Consolidated District 5 officials, Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School students were sent home shortly after 10 a.m. The students were kept in the gymnasium until school officials decided to cancel classes for the day.

Dozens of law enforcement officers are on the scene investigating damage to approximately 20 classrooms, according to Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.

"Our preliminary investigation indicates individuals entered the building and caused vandalism to classrooms and removed electronics," said Ravenell. "The Sheriff's Office was notified by the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety after they responded to a fire alarm at 3:31 a.m."

Ravenell said his department is working with the district to collect evidence and repair damages in advance of classes resuming.
