Sheriff’s Office Investigating Shooting Death - Deceased Subject Identified
Friday, May 11, 2012

Lancaster, SC – On Wednesday May 09th, 2012 at approximately 11:13 PM Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 2314 Old Blackmon Ln. within the County of Lancaster for a reported shooting. Upon arrival Deputies located Stephen Lamont Westbrook (B/M DOB: 06/03/1972 1082 Bowser St. Rock Hill, SC) in the driveway of the residence. Westbrook was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was found beside Westbrook’s body. Deputies were then summoned inside of the home where Mardrickus Javon Belk (B/M DOB: 09/19/1986 Address: 896 Mark Ln. Lancaster) was found in the living room on the floor. Belk was found to be critically injured and was transported to the hospital. Belk was pronounced dead at CMC Charlotte on May 10th. Both subjects appeared to have been shot.

Criminal Investigators and Crime Scene Investigators arrived on scene and began a detailed investigation. Investigators did locate two different firearms on the scene and a significant quantity of illegal narcotics was found inside the home. At this point the facts of the investigation have shown that Westbrook came to the residence to rob someone there of illegal narcotics. During that robbery attempt, Westbrook and Belk began shooting at each other and ultimately shot and killed each other. Both Westbrook and Belk, based on their criminal histories were prohibited by law from possessing firearms.

The case remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time.

Sheriff Faile said, “Both Belk and Westbrook had a very lengthy criminal history. Both have been convicted of violent crimes, weapons charges, and drug charges. It is unfortunate that these individuals lost their lives however when you lead a life of crime and drugs, tragedy is bound to occur. This incident should serve as a lesson to young folks that involvement in criminal activity is a road to nowhere.”
