Report: Man handcuffs girlfriend to prove a point
Wednesday, May 16, 2012

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department arrested a West Columbia man after he handcuffed his girlfriend to prove a point, according to sheriff’s deputies.

According to the incident report, 33-year-old Michael Robert Shelley was arrested on a charge of criminal domestic violence in connection with assault on May 3.

Deputies say around 8 a.m. they responded to a domestic call in the parking lot of Big Lots located at 3230 Augusta Road.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the 27-year-old female victim who was handcuffed with her hands in the front of her body, the report stated.

The woman told officers that she and her former live-in boyfriend got into an argument and he placed handcuffs on her and told her good luck getting out because he doesn’t have a key, the report stated. The woman added that she was scared and just wanted to get away from Shelley.

Deputies say they removed the handcuffs from the female victim and observed redness around her wrist.

A short time later, officers made contact with Shelley who admitted to handcuffing his girlfriend to prove a point, the report stated.

Shelley was arrested and transported to Lexington County Detention Center.

Deputies say both parties admitted to consuming alcohol through the night and into the morning hours.
