Sheriff’s Office Arrests Suspect in the Stabbing death of his 87 year old Great-Grandmother
Tuesday, April 17, 2012

LANCASTER, SC – On Sunday 04/15/2012 at approximately 8:40 PM Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 949 Grace Ave. when a family member checking on Verdie E. Mackey (W/F DOB: 06/16/1924 Address: 949 Grace Ave. Lancaster, SC) found her dead inside the home. Mackey appeared to have been stabbed to death.

Criminal Investigators and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and began a detailed investigation. Investigators quickly identified Mackey’s great-grandson, William Richard Greene (W/M DOB: 04/21/1983 Address: 2093 Evans Dr. Lancaster, SC) as a potential suspect. Greene was located a short time later and taken into custody. Evidence found where Greene was located linked him to the crime. It is believed that Greene went to Mackey’s home in an attempt to get money. When Mackey refused, Greene became angry and stabbed her to death.

Greene has been charged with Murder and Possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is incarcerated at the Lancaster County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Sheriff Faile said, “We are shocked and saddened by the brutality of this crime. Our condolences go to Mrs. Mackey’s family. We are however thankful that we could bring this investigation to a close so quickly and get Greene in jail where he belongs.”
