Suspect in double murder traced to Louisiana
Wednesday, March 21, 2012

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) - An SUV being driven by a double homicide suspect on the run from Orangeburg was found in Louisiana.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office says 27-year-old Vicente Mendoza is accused of killing 21-year-old Hope Bowers and 37-year-old Latonia Profit.

On Monday, Bowers' family became concerned because they hadn't heard from her in several hours so they called law enforcement.

After a search, Profit and Bowers were found dead in an abandoned trailer on Collinwood Road on Tuesday.

Deputies say the trailer had been abandoned for years. Neighbors in the area say there usually isn't much activity in the heavily wooded area except for gunshots from hunting or target practice.

William Etheredge and his wife walk about 2 miles around their property almost everyday. He found out from a friend living in Florida that the two women had been killed. That friend read the news online.

"She said, 'You have a double homicide right next door,' and I said, 'We do?'

Deputies say Mendoza lived on Snake Swamp Road -- just around the corner from the crime scene. They believe some time over the last few days, Mendoza took Profit's SUV and drove to Louisiana. Detectives found that vehicle about an hour west of Baton Rouge early Tuesday morning.

Law enforcement officials in Louisiana believe Mendoza may be in the Acadiana region of the state.

Mendoza is described as a male weighing 165 pounds, 5'4" tall with brown eyes, and black hair.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information about Mendoza's whereabouts, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
