Loaded Gun Found at Columbia Metropolitan Airport Checkpoint
Tuesday, March 20, 2012

West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Transportation Security Administration says a loaded handgun was discovered at a security checkpoint at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

The incident took place at 3 p.m. Monday.

Officers say an x-ray screening of 39-year-old Jassen Robert Volk's carry-on bag revealed that there was a .380 inside.

TSA officials say police were alerted. An incident report states an officer asked Volk if he carried a firearm in his bag, and the man replied that he didn't think so, but he did sometimes randomly carry a firearm in the bag.

A report says they found six rounds and one in the chamber.

Officers say Volk does have a concealed weapons permit. He was cited on a local weapons charge, and has a court date next month.

Federal regulations allow firearms in checked baggage if they are declared, but they can't be in carry-ons.

The TSA says 1,300 firearms were discovered by TSA at checkpoints nationwide during 2011.
