DEPUTIES TO INTERACT WITH CHILDREN AT OPENING DAY FOR SPRING SPORTS
Monday, March 5, 2012

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies will interact with children between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 during an Opening Day event for youth spring sports teams that are affiliated with the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission. The event will be held at athletic fields at Chapin Elementary School, 940 Old Bush River Road, Chapin.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies will interact with children by measuring the speed at which children throw baseballs, measuring children’s accuracy in throwing baseballs and timing the speed at which children run the bases at a baseball field. Children will be able to play video games at a booth that will be manned by employees with a Best Buy store.

Cadets with the Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post will prepare fingerprint identification cards for children who are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, Metts said. The cards enable law enforcement officers to quickly identify children in the event that children are harmed.

The Sheriff’s Department Dive Team and Lake Murray Marine Patrol will conduct static displays for children at the event, Metts said.

The participation of the Sheriff’s Department in the Opening Day event for sports teams in the Chapin community reflects the agency’s mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
