EXPLORERS POST CADETS WIN FOUR AWARDS
Thursday, February 23, 2012

LEXINGTON, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post #106 cadets won four awards at the South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers Winter Expo, which was held on Saturday, February 18 through Monday, February 20 in Anderson.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Explorers Post cadets won first place in the active shooter response competition, second place overall, second place in the disturbance at a bar competition and third place in the drug interdiction traffic stop competition.

“I am very proud of the awards that cadets with our agency’s Explorers Post won during the Law Enforcement Explorers competition,” Metts said. “The cadets take their service with the Explorers Post very seriously, and they regularly conduct training with full-time sheriff’s deputies, who serve as advisors for the Explorers Post.”

The Explorers Post has served as an excellent recruitment tool for the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said. Over the years, Metts has hired many former Explorer cadets to work as full-time deputies. The program provides excellent training and personal development for teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement.

Explorers Post cadets create fingerprint identification cards for children so that children can be identified readily in the event that they are reported missing, Metts said. They also direct traffic at various businesses during the busy Christmas holiday shopping season.

Metts encourages teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement to join the Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 14 and 20, with a clean criminal record. You must be enrolled in school and maintain a “C” grade average. Citizens who want additional information about the Explorers Post should contact Sheriff’s Department Lt. Alan Driggers at (803) 785-2581 or via e-mail at adriggers@lcsd.sc.gov.

If you, or someone you know, have any information regarding any crime, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers. You could earn a reward up to $1,000.
