Deputies arrest woman wanted for driving murder suspect's getaway vehicle
Friday, February 3, 2012

ORANGEBURG, SC - Orangeburg County deputies arrested a Summerville woman they say drove a murder suspect away from a crime scene Thursday night.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said 46-year-old Joann Jefferson was wanted for "knowingly and willingly assisting" Demetrice Dwight Perry, 32, in evading law enforcement by transporting him from a shooting scene on Peach Shed Rd. in Vance back to Summerville.

Deputies say Jefferson was arrested and after making statements to investigators that following a fatal shooting on Peach Shed Road January 26, she transported Demetrice Dwight Perry from Vance to Summerville.

Bond has been set at $10,000 cash or surety on Joann Jefferson.

Perry is accused of shooting a 50-year-old man as they argued in front of the victim’s residence. After an exhaustive search since Thursday night, deputies arrested and charged Perry with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

“Perry’s arrest brings closure to the victim’s family and allows my officers to redirect manpower and resources to provide services to citizens in this county," said Ravenell. "I applaud all the officers involved in this investigation for the phenomenal job they performed in making this arrest in four days.”

Perry was expected to appear in court on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Because he is charged with murder, bond will not be set, Ravenell said.
