ORANGEBURG, SC - Police arrested a man who they say tossed marijuana into a washing machine to avoid being arrested.

The Times and Democrat reported that a 31-year-old Elloree man was taken into custody and charged with simple possession of marijuana on January 29.

Santee Police say around 1 pm officers responded to a call in reference to drug activity at LS&D Laundromat on Flintlock Court.

Upon arrival, officers say the noticed a “suspicious” man inside the business talking to customers, when a woman entered asking if anyone saw a cell phone she may have accidentally left there.

According to police, officers asked customers for permission to frisk search each of them.

Police say during the search, they noticed that the “suspicious” man had walked over to an empty washing machine and placed something inside it. When officers searched the man they discovered a large amount of money and a cell phone.

Officers say when they looked into the empty washer and they found 10 small, clear bags of marijuana totaling 8.5 grams.
