MASTER DIVER RATING
Monday, January 9, 2012

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Five deputies who serve on the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team will receive certificates at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 9 to show that they successfully attained the Master Diver rating that is administered by Scuba Schools International (SSI). It is one of the highest ratings that law enforcement divers can attain.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Wateree Dive Center officials will present Master Diver certificates to Lt. Billy Aiken, Sgt. Wesley Swinson, Senior Crime Scene Investigator Mike Phipps, Deputy Will Patterson and Deputy Jason Jones in the Squad Room at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington.

In order to be certified as a Master Diver, the five deputies had to successfully complete four specialized diver training classes, including diver stress and rescue, navigation, diving at night and in conditions in which visibility is limited and diving at great depths, Metts said. Each of the five deputies also had to successfully complete a minimum of 50 dives.

Members of the Sheriff’s Department Dive Team use their diving skills to locate persons who have been reported missing on Lake Murray and other bodies of water, Metts said. Dive Team members also use their diving skills to locate weapons and other physical evidence that is submerged in bodies of water and connected to criminal activity.
