GRAND OPENING GASTON SUBSTATION
Tuesday, January 17, 2012

GASTON, SC - The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a grand opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18 for the agency’s Gaston community substation. The substation is located at a former South Carolina Forestry Commission office and fire tower at 221 South Main Street in the town of Gaston.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the Sheriff’s Department will open the Gaston substation at little cost to Lexington County taxpayers. The Sheriff’s Department will pay the state Forestry Commission $1 per year to lease office space for the substation. The town of Gaston will present a check in the amount of $1,000 at the grand opening ceremony in order to help cover the cost of operating the substation. Citizens and businesses donated additional money to cover the remaining costs of operating the substation.

Gaston Resident Deputy Shannon Lovell coordinated efforts to open the substation, Metts said. The substation will make it easier for citizens to meet with Lovell in to order to discuss how Lovell can work in partnership with them to enhance the quality of life for people in the Gaston community.

In addition, deputies who are assigned to road patrol duty can use the substation to meet with citizens who want to report criminal activity, Metts said. The substation also will enhance the law enforcement presence in the Gaston community.

Metts said the following persons and businesses donated money to cover the cost of operating the Gaston substation: David Owen with the state Forestry Commission, Lexington County Councilman Bobby Keisler, Lexington County Councilman James Kinard, Gaston Mayor Troy Bivens and Gaston Town Council, Food Lion, Lovely Cleaning Service, Congaree Homes, Colonial Life Insurance, Corner Mart, Copes Insurance, M&M Auto Sales, Double B Foods, Quick Pantry, Jaylaxmi, Elma and Warren Anderson, Gaston Community Neighborhood Watch and Sharpes Hill Neighborhood Watch, The Store, Bi-Rite Foods, Diamond Pet Food, 321 Auto Sales, Country Gas Mart, Gramma’s Diner, Three Fountains Recreation, Day’s Towing, Southern Belles and Beaus, Fred’s, Beverly Roberts, Sloan Appliance, Calvary Chapel, Little Caesar’s Pizza in Gaston, Fatz Café in Lexington, Dollar General in Gaston, Pound Automotive in Gaston and Gaston BP.
