Middle school student arrested for bringing gun to school
Tuesday, December 6, 2011

SALUDA, SC (WIS) - A Saluda Middle School student was arrested Monday for bringing a handgun to school.

According to Saluda School District One Superintendent Dr. David Mathis, several students told administrators that they had seen the weapon.

Mathis said a School Resource Officer quickly confiscated the gun from the student's book bag and removed the student from campus within minutes of the notification.

The gun was not loaded and the student did not bring any bullets to school, Mathis said.

"The safety of our students is of the utmost importance and we encourage all parents to talk about this matter with their students," said Mathis, "and remind them of the importance of letting a teacher or administrator know when another student has a dangerous item at school, such as a weapon."

The school district did not release the identity of the student who was arrested.

Nobody was hurt.

Calls to the sheriff's department about this incident have not been returned.
