Man charged with child neglect, jailed
Wednesday, December 7, 2011

AIKEN, SC - An Aiken man who returned home intoxicated after leaving his 1-year-old and 4-year-old daughters alone for more than an hour Monday morning has been arrested, officials said.

Albert Walker Jr., 31, of Old Powderhouse Road is charged with two counts of unlawful neglect of a child.

Deputies with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office were notified by an anonymous caller that the front door of a residence on Old Powderhouse Road was ajar, and asked for law enforcement to check out the residence.

The caller phoned for help around 7 a.m., according to the report.

When deputies arrived at the home, they noticed the front door was as the caller had described and knocked on the door.

A small child answered, "It's open, come in," according to the report.

The deputy spotted the 4-year-old and entered the home.

He asked the girl if there were any adults home, and she told him there were not.

The 1-year-old child was not wearing a diaper and "was carrying a bottle with spoiled formula in it," the deputy wrote in his report.

The older girl told deputies they were alone "a lot."

Deputies also took a piece of hard candy from the hand of the 1-year-old. The older girl told deputies that the younger girl was hungry.

After deputies contacted a family member, and were waiting for a responsible family member, the suspect returned home, deputies said.

Walker told deputies his sister was at the home when he left, but the suspect's sister denied having been at the residence, deputies said.

The law enforcement officer said Walker smelled like alcohol.

He was jailed at the Aiken County detention center.
