Village at Sandhill - Santa Rings in Holiday Season escorted by Sheriff Lott, Iraq War Veteran and Fire fighters‏
Thursday, November 3, 2011

Columbia, SC – Village at Sandhill continues its tradition of free family friendly events by joining with the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Area Council for the “Salute to the Troops Holiday Parade and Santa Arrival”, presented by the Celebrate Freedom Foundation®. The parade to welcome Santa and honor our nation’s military and their families will kick off the holiday season at Village at Sandhill on Saturday November 12 at 8:00a.m. The parade will begin in the Plex Indoor Sports Complex parking area. The route will continue along Forum Drive to Town Center Place to Promenade Place in front of Belk, then through Town Center Commons and the fountain roundabout and end at “Santa’s Village” between Reeds Jewelers and Massage Envy Spa.

Military, civic, and community organizations from the area including the Columbia Fire Department as well as Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and representatives from the Richland County Sheriff’s motorcycle, horse-mounted, and K-9 patrols are scheduled to participate. Ft. Jackson will be providing the color guard for the event. The Celebrate Freedom Foundation®, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating children, promoting lasting patriotism and honoring the military—past, present and future, is scheduled to have its US Army half-track and helicopter on display.

Joining Santa and serving as parade Grand Marshal is Ft. Jackson Sgt. Peter J. Lara. A recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for his service in Iraq in 2005, Sgt. Lara will be representing the many local military personnel and their families who have given so much to America. In addition to the parade, other events will take place to benefit local and national outreach. They include:

  • The American Red Cross will be on hand near “Santa’s Village” to conduct the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” campaign. People are invited to sign holiday greeting cards with messages of thanks and support to our nation’s military service personnel and veterans. Red Cross volunteers and Pitney Bowes will screen, sort and deliver the cards to military installations and veterans and military hospitals across the U.S. and around the world.
  • Non-perishable food items will be collected in the Super Bi-Lo parking area at Village at Sandhill as we “Fill the Mayflower” in a Thanksgiving food-drive to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank. Nilson Van & Storage of Columbia will provide a “Mayflower” moving truck from 8:00a.m to Noon to collect food for needy Midland area families.
  • Carolina Records & Management will offer free document shredding near “Santa’s Village” from 8:00 a.m. to Noon with the donation of a new and unwrapped gift for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots.

“Village at Sandhill is excited to welcome Santa and honor our military and their families,” said General Manager Jeff Harper. “We invite the community to come out and help us ring in the holiday season!”

Limited space to participate in the parade by community organizations and school groups is still available. Call the Village at Sandhill management office at 803-419-0235 or send an email to info@villageastsandhillonline.com for information.
