Deputies seize more contraband from Lee Correctional
Friday, November 4, 2011

LEE COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Deputies say more contraband was thrown over a fence at the Lee County jail on Sunday.

Three bags were confiscated on Sunday, and investigators found several prepaid cell phones, cigarettes and marijuana.

Three people were taken into custody. At least seven people have been caught trying to smuggle contraband in prison since August, including Sunday's arrests.

Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon says he's tired of the incidents draining his manpower, and deputies are planning to crack down.

"I'm tired of this because we're spending a lot of man hours when we could be fighting other crimes," said Simon.

Around 9:30am Thursday, workers at a nearby nursery farm spotted a car and a four person crew suspiciously close to the prison fence.

After being spotted, Simon says the four suspects drove off and the nursery workers called their boss.

"If they didn't get in contact with him we would have missed all of this," said Simon.

The owner of the nursery then followed the suspects and called 911.

Ten miles down the road, deputies caught the suspects off Elliott Highway, pulled them over and that's when deputies say they found the contraband.

"He saw this package right here in the front underneath the front seat of the vehicle," said Simon.

Just last Saturday, officers in the prison broke up a fight involving 40 inmates after contraband was thrown over the fence. Simon says, if this operation had been successful, the suspects would have gotten paid, but now they're behind bars potentially facing their own prison time.

"They were going to make $200 for the drop," said Simon. "Is this worth $200? No."

The sheriff says he's working with the Department of Corrections to combat the problem.

All four suspects are facing felony charges and are scheduled to appear in court Friday.
